Massep or African basil (Ocimum gratissimum) is a tropical basil from the Lamiaceae family which is native to central Africa.
The antioxidant found in African basil is rosmaniric acid which belongs to the polyphenol group. Flavonoids and phenolic acids with antioxidant properties are also present in basil. Basil also contains beta-caryophyllene (BCP), a natural anti-inflammatory compound.
Rich in camphor, Massep is effective against colds and flu because it clears the respiratory tract. It can also be used as a cough treatment to soothe sore throats. Gargling it will relieve oral infections. As a herbal tea, it allows you to sleep well and therefore have restful sleep. Massep is also given digestive properties. Used as an infusion or decoction, it facilitates digestion, reduces flatulence, bloating and is an excellent natural dewormer. You can also chew a leaf to calm temporary indigestion. It treats diarrhea, vomiting and nausea.
